[Note: January 1857 and February 1857 entries appeared both in Journal 2 and Journal 3. While mostly duplicated word for word, there were some variations. This is a compilation of the two versions.]

Notice 1857. The land intended for rye must be ploughed early & deep & the seed sown in August, for wheat 29th Sept or there abouts, as near as possible about the time above mentioned

Cdy d wind north & n west Snowed last night 2 in deep Eugene & John and Jimy came last night 9 or 10 ock Eugene was shooting birds with a – pistol shot through one of his fingers Dr Anderson & Dr Lin came – fixed his finger up sent for Bro Saml came over & went back in evening Clarence came & spent a few minutes Kitty S was – hear Bro Saml stayed I might keep Julia Ann this year for thirty-seven collars provided she has no increase I bought a stock & disc for three dollars {cutting & halling wood sent a lode shucks to Mr Taylor |

Cdy day the snow melted a good deel I started to Bro Saml in sleygh went to Ma, & borrowed buggy & went for Sister Conelia carryed Jimy & Lizzie over to stay a few d. Mr Smith Bro S,s overseer is at home – I went by Ma, & to store bought a bottle spirits turpentine for Sister Co & 4 lbs sugar at 15 cts lb {cutting & halling for Mr Taylor wood brought up a lode straw |

Cdy mor Snowed a little in the evening very windy & cold to night I went to Carmel Bro Thomas preached & joined the church Bro – Fox gave him the right hand etc Anna, buggy shaft broke the wind blew it against tree Bro Saml & I went to Davy Cobbs to see Jas Cobbs for Ma, our horses ran away with us Bro Saml came up went home to night. Wm Robinson came by set down work etc {beet out peas striping tobacco struck it down at E hill halling wood etc |

Fair a cool day I went to Rehobarth to hear a discussion between Williams the Methodist & Dr Lin Anderson De had much the advantage in speaches on Baptism Bro Saml came by from meeting & went home to night. |

Cdy most of the day I went to Ma, to see if Cobbs would come went for barouch shaft & harness Dr Lin came by I carryed Sister Conelia & Eugene home this evening Betty came with me to Ma, Jimy & Lizzie came home. We met Ann Talley & Wm & Cousin John & Lucy Taylor going to Bro Saml [Ali?] Walker went to my shop for plunder etc {burning a plant bed by out gate near the main rode halling wood to it etc |

Cdy most of the day & cold I went to Mr Harris, to see him about getting wood & rails on Mr Lowerys land. Saw Willy H Wiltshire & Jas Watkins. Came by the plant bed & sowed it swung the gate went to Ma,s met with Wm Harris he went to Anna it Snowed a few flakes last night Plant bed {howed up & sowed a plant bed in Tobacco seed covered it commenced another by it |

Fair a very cold windy day I went J Swann for Harriet at Winstons old place B Terrell & Winston wer there came by store I stoped at plant bed saw L Terrell at bed Betty Redd & Emma walked up this evening & went back got a Letter from Llewellyn 2 Plant beds {burnt a plant bed by the other & sowed – tobacco seed on it & guano etc halling wood |

Fair a very cold day & morning I went to Ma, borrowed Betty Redd, shall [shawl] I went to the Depot bought some stamps for Letters & sent a letter to Llewellyn & one to H Anderson Texas bought a pt spirits for Ma, to put in camphor gave 10 cts. Went to Depot John Quarles came from Depot I stoped at Ma, & dined Bro Saml was there {covered plant bed & hands went to Ma to get ice etc |

I moved my work bench in in end room of the kitchen commenced work helved an axe or two makg a trap for minks double trap Mr Taylor had 1/2 bu corn for hens I mashed my thum Miss Betty Hill at Anna, {cutting short wood halled 3 loads faning wheat to go to mill shelled 4 bu corn & sent – to mill |

Fair a very cold day or morning I – went to River & raised my boat out of the ice I crossed the river on ice I went to Ma, Betty G got back from the Dr, - Betty R coming up in morning, went to E Field faned out & baged 40 bu wheat I fixed up a spining wheel & Jones came by with Hudsons account etc {cutting wood halled a lode or 2 of bushes & put them back of stable faned out 40 bu wheat & baged it etc |

(Fair day after morning)Snowed all night last very cold & windy all night the windyest & coldest night I most ever new to be snowing all the time, the snow is -banked up some 6 – 8 – or 10 feet in places I don't know that I ever saw such a snow it is packed very hard the snow is 4 or 5 feet deep in my – stable & cow shelter. Wm Robinson came by Bob came to night Robert went to Ma, this evening I went with him to the out gate. My guinneys & a hen froze last night before some hens frost bitten etc |

Fair a monstrous cold day the coldest day I think I ever felt amost the morning, and the night before Mr Taylor came up May days calf died last night. I hitched Davy went to sleygh went by Ma, to mill saw Buttler went to Bro Saml dined there a Mr Fields there saw 3 engines ploughing through the snow by Mr Buttlers, old Amy Cloy & child burnt to death. Rainy evening moderate rain the weather has moderated a good deel snow is melting quite fast to day I went to Ma, & to store bought 8 yds calico gave 11 cts for 6 yds 10 cts for 2 yds got 10 cts worth paper 96 cts in all saw Mr Harris & L Terell at store I sent for Lanzey at Mr L Cobbs {rakg snow out of barn at E Field cutting and halling wood cut down the pine at barn & broke my X cut saw at handle etc |
