Day Journals of James T. Redd - February 1849

Th 1st sow died [sketch of blank hand]	Cdy misty morning I finshed the little cart body & put in on [laid??] of water banks over the swamp next to Anne's sow died last night Mr Hullett lost 2 of his daughters last night with measles - the other 1 week ago cutting grubing halling wood ploughing etc.
Fri 2nd $126.62	Rain foggy & a very murky day I patched up my harness went to mill to get some S. Cantlin to mend my cart I went for a load of shucks dr. Anderson came by & pd me $126.62cts Franks here ploughing grubing halling shucks etc.
Sat 3rd	Fair I went to Carmel - Bro harris preached we went to T. Castle in the evening met with Linnaeus & family at T Castle [Thomasia's younger brother Dr. Linnaeus Beorhave Anderson] ploughing halling wood grubing etc. etc
Sun 4th	Rainy evening I went to Carmel Bro Harris preached he came to T Castle to dinner We came up this evening
M 5th 2 bu wheat shop	Rainy morning & very heavy rain last night I sent 2 bushels wheat to mill & a turn corn shelling etc workg on Black Smith Shop on anvill ?? cuting burning brush etc
Tus 6th Blacksmith logs 3	Fair cool William Robinson came to work in the shop. has been repairing the tools most of the day Robert helping to strike I have been sawing most of the day for Mr. Hill & halling logs one 1/2 for the other saw Bro Henry Davist & Smith this evening holling logs to the mill halled 3 grubing burning brush
W7th bench etc Smith 1 Lamb Logs 3	Fair very cold day I went to slash put a log in cart halled 2 loads I put up a bench & vice in shop finished my ploughs commenced Mamas this evening we had a lamb the first this year halling logs halled 2 loads- rails fencing in fodder stacks halling wood grubing burnins brush & halled a load slabs
Th 8th Smith Log 1	Cdy day very cold day a south west win the ground perfectly hard all day working in shop till dinner for Mama most of the evening for me finished-done some work for Dr. Anderson- halled 1 log to the mill for Mr. Hill halling wood cutting burnigh brush etc. halled a log to mill
Fr 9th $17.50cts to Mr Duke flour 3 loads manure	Fair moderate weather I halled a log to themill for S Catlin for a cart body I spoke for a quarter of beef of Mrs. Gouldin at 5 1/2 cts hine qtr went to Mr Dukes pd for Nelson & Jeffs hire last year 32$50cts spoke to Mr White to clean my clock for 2$ - brought up planks & flour halled 2 or 3 loads of manure to wheat field cutting grubing burning brush etc etc
Sat 10th Beef qt clock cleaned 2 $2.50cts to White 2 lambs	Fair cold morning sent to mill for beef got a quarter of Mr Gouldin am to give 5 1/2 cts brought 2 S Cautlin from mill Mr Robert Wright came to clean my clock he cleaned the clock & musical box sawed a scythe charged 2$ 62 1/2 cts pd him $2.50cts Tom Swann came to bring a hen for Llewellyn he dined hear to day Llewellyn went with him home ewe had lam yesterday or today halling wood grubing burning brush etc etc
S 11th sow & pigs	Fair mild a very fine day I spent the day at home Harry Durcott came to borrow a saw for Henry Martin the Cobbs sow has pigs 10 in number very fine pigs
M 12th plough beef sow $12.16 Quarles $2.25	Cdy a few flakes snow cool day west win n.w. I put a bolt on the old chaimber door burning brush to day etc. ploughing grubing burning brush cut out qt beef etc. etc. Thads hair sent Martin a saw Durcott came for it Pd William Quarles $2.16 for work rendered me 1848 in full for Matthews
Tus 13th bed $5.50 T.C. $21 JTA $9.00 lost	Fair a cool day I went to the Depot for a bed & bed stid & clover seed & I paid Chandler $5.50cts for Casey for 2 stacks fodder met with man & Tom pd man $20 for manure bought last fall of J T Anderson [Verdon??] Bro Sam came for Harriet I lost about 9 dollars at depot sent over to the mill for meal ploughing grubing halled a load straw etc.
W 14th clover seed	Fair a cool day cold morning I have been quite complaining most of the day Edmund T Redd dined hear to day [Edmund Taylor Redd, Jr, 1831-1884, nephew] I sowed some clover seed on the land that the guano was sowed halled a load or 2 of wood ploughing grubing burning brush etc. etc
Th 15th clover seed	Fair quite a cold day I went to Chesterfield Depot to look for a bank note lost a day or two ago $9 herd nothing of it Saw Cobbs sow & pigs this evening has 10 pigs sowed some clover seed finished the guano lan[d] halled loads manure to the wheat that was drilled ?? dressed it etc. cutting malling ploughing grubing burning brush etc etc
Sat 17th 50 cts pd W	Cdy most of the day White fixed the clock & box mended my pencil paid him 50cts for rings mended & he went to Mr Gouldins Mrs. H Anderson came to stay with Thomasia cutting grubing burning brush halled a load wood
Sun 18th 20 cts	Snow fine the ground covered nearly spent the day at home very cold day pd Jefrey 20cts for making shoes
M 19th	Fair cold cutting wood S Cobbs gave me a [receipt??] for coffin for Sister Sarah halling wood cutting grubing burning brush & shelling corn
Tues 20th logs 4 planks $35	Cdy a few flakes snow I went to the mill with 2 stacks halled 4 5o mill faned out & sent nearly 12 bushels wheat to mill - brought up a load of planks Katy laid up with coal [cold] halling logs to mill for Mr Hill 4 halled load planks for him cutting burning brush etc. Paid Miss Harriet Ann Anderson [Thomasia's younger sister] $35.00 cts for bed & stid in full
W 21st party 2 bls flour	Cdy Snowed lastnight the ground covered all gone a minck killed 2 or3 hens at stack I went to the mill tohelp divide the flour - brought up 2 barrells flour the girls came from Bro Saml Edmon dined hear to day we went to Anna, to a party made a pair of yoke bows Halling wood cutting burning brush sent to mill for flour
Th 22th oats beating out	Snowy day commenced this morning it fell about 2 or 3 inches deep rain a little this evening, lent Mr. Hill a passell fo tools to make ox cart body beeting out oats cut out 1/2 S ?? for William Martha & Bob 1/2 souled my shoes a dayh or two a go beeting out oats in the barn most of the day
Fr 23rd 20 dollars oats	Cdy the snow melted a good deel I went to W Swanns to pay my shop account & for the ? wheat $20 dollars - I sent for Dr. Anderson I went for Mama to see Thomasia last night they went home this evening lent Anna a auger beeting out oats halling wood
Sat 24th oats 12 1/2 bu ewe died	Cdy most of the day - the snow nearly all gone finished beeting out the oats faned them out 12 1/2 bushels in all halled a load straw scined [skinned] a ewe that died yesterday halling wood getting out oats
Sun 25th Baby Dr. Anderson 2 lambs dog	Cdy nearly all day cool I sent for Dr. Anderson to see Thomasia she has a son the sixth child [James Temple Redd, Jr. 1849-1930 our great grandfather] The Dr. was from home sent for Linnaeus they both came I went for Mama had 2 lambs to day put up prince etta [dog's name] in barn
M 26th	Snowed hailed & rained snowed in the night all melted I went to new grown [ground??] to look at my wheat cutting wood shelling corn etc.
Tus 27th hamper	Rainy day fine rain mostly I commenced a boat nearly finished it halled a load or two of wood & load straw sent corn to mill shelfing etc. Bob made new hamper
W 28th	Rainy day fine rain north east win & has been for 3 or 4 days I finished my boat commenced cart body Thad caught a halk [hawk] halling wood halled 2 loads shuck etc
