Day Journals of James T. Redd - January 1844

1 st M

A north east & north west wind Fair a fine day I went to W Terrels to get him to hire me a hand at Popler Inn [in Caroline County] I sent Lewis to the depot for a bl flour & cotton & wash stand for Dr Anderson Frank came to see me Bob listing on the hill by the 2 nd posimon tree mama hired Joh to Mr Harris shelling corn

2 nd T

Rain a little hail I went to the mill with Thomasia & children went to Mr S Gopuldins Dr Gouldin & Carpenter dined with him I saw Winston & W Swann at the mill [Grebin?] Spencer brought 2 hoes & a spade down from Mr Watkins listing halling wood etc had my hair cut to day William Swann & Winston joined the shop at the mill shelling corn Mama has an overseer Johnson

Fair killed 3 hogs this morning pulled the old kitchen down patching up the fence on the hill by the fodder stack made a fence around the stack I saw Dr Gouldin S Gouldin & Mr Harris at Mama,s there was something said about sebttling with Mama & about Dab

Fair cool day weighed my hogs – 3 weighed 204 lbs making 1154 lbs in all sent Lewis to T Castle for ashes carried the Dr’s wash stand ploughing etc  I went to [“the Depot” lined out] Chesterfield for a coat frock pd. 5.00 for it and to Terell Cobbs and hired Bartlett for 471/2$ he is to be sent Monday morning I met Dr Anderson at Hills shop

Fair cold day I went to the mill to see S. Redd he did not come I saw Henry Martin talked about swaping a horse for a mule John & Lewis are at work at the new ground malling rails cutting etc ploughing grubbing etc Mama lade up with cold W Smith came to see the corn in shop

6 th S

Fair cold day a large frost I went to Carmel Brother Harris Preached Text 23 Psalms 6 th verse let Brother Harris have a mad axe [type of adze; user straddles a piece of timber and swings towards himself] for 90 cts Mrs Coalman name was taken of the church book I saw Terrel Cobbs got of of the hire of his negro Bartlett ploughing grubbing halled a lode of wood

7 th Sun

Fair we went to T Castle I went to Carmel Bro Harris preached Text Philippians 2 nd Chap part of 12 verse & 13 verse spent the d night at T. Castle concluded to take Bartlett

Fair cold I came up home Swaped John for a mule got or am to get 30$ to boot on 60 days work of Mr Martin Henry Bartlett came home to day. Ploughing grubbing etc Sent a mall to mill for Bro Harris at 90 cts.

Snow and rain in the evening I came up home from TC & went back at night Vinckner Cobbs came up and ordered Bartlett home cutting wood halling etc

Cdy till the evening I came up home & went back for Thomasia. I saw Mr Harris & Mr Martin at the shop or near the division of the negroes of John, estate took place to day I went to T Cobbs to see him about his negro he takes him from me & hires him in Richmond for 60$ he is off of the bargain {met Mr Moncur sent 2 turns of corn to the mill - - brought meal & chop Bartlett went home this morning - Billy

Fair cold day I went to Brother Saml & to Edmond Barkleys & hired a hand Billy for 45$ hired a boy of Landon Berkley 7 1/2 dollars hat & blanket. George cutting malling halling wood I went to Mt Airy to hire Lewis Sancho my pointer puppy was pupped to day 11 th Jany 1844

Rainy day I went to the shop had the mare shod in front Billy cutting shelling corn etc I went to the mill to see if George came with the cart. – he did not come to day Bob is sick to day -

Fair windy day pleasant weather cutting halling wood etc I run up Marias chimney to day George came home this evening saw N Luck & R Cobbs at the shop

Cdy day mod. [moderate] weather I went to T Castle in the evening to get some spirits of turpentine for Llewellyn [used for muscle aches, toothache, etc.] Billy went to hanover to day

Rainy day fine rane malling rakeing leaves ploughing a little striping tobacco in the barn I made a pair mule hames [2 carved pieces of wood attached to the collar, to which traces are attached] & altered a coller for the mule

Rain fine I carried a pair of hames axe & shovel to the mill to Winston Tom dined hear Ed. T. Redd is hear to night striping tobacco malling hallalling wood rakeing leaves

Rain till evening winday Edmond is hear I cut out a pad for a cart saddle & made it nearly britchen [part of the harness that fits over the rump and keeps the saddle from moving forward] etc for the same got 2 buckkles from S Redd malling rakeing leaves halling leaves wood sent to mill for meal 2 bags carried corn etc striping tobacco in the morning

18 th T

Fair winday day fixing cart saddle cutting malling halling wood leaves etc rakeing I ground my axe Wm Harris came by Thomasia went to T. Castle to wash cloth Tom came up with Edmond T. Redd to stay all night

Fair a fine day large frost I went to the mill with Tom & Edmond T. R had 2 rings & holes for cart britching made finished the cart britching I am takeing some physic malling rakeing leaves cutting etc Anna came to Mamas to day Edmond & Tom went home in evening

20 th Sat

Fair cool day I went to the mill carried a bag of cotton Llewellyn went with me I saw Mr Luck H Lowery pass my new ground Mr Luck killed my turkey says he will give me one malling rails cutting rakeing leaves commenced ploughing in the evening

21 st Sun

Snow commenced last night fel to day from 2 to 3 inches deep Dr Gouldin came by this evening to tell about my pointer puppy

Cdy day I went to Dr Gopuldins started the turkeys shot 5 times at them saw my puppy saw Mr harris at the mill etc Cutting halling wood etc Dr G cut a stack on the rode to day I went to T Castle this evening for physic etc saw Miss E {?] Mr & Mrs Terrell.

Cdy rained nearly all night fair in the evening cutting malling rakeing leaves etc I got a pair of hames from the shop Fleming brought them up

Rain a little fair evening warm I carried a axe to the mill shop. Cutting malling rails rakeing leaves etc

Fair cold day a north wind I saw Mr Martin & John horse at Mr Martins. Dr Gouldin dined hear to day We went to Mr Cooke’sto see his cows or to by a cow. Got a shovel & chop axe from Winstons at the mill cutting malling rails rakeing leaves sent to mill for cotton I made a shaft to my Baruche

Fair a cold day coldest day we have had Miss Mary Ann Temple & Sister Sarah dined hear to day I ground my chop axe chisels etc halling wood cutting etc etc

Fair hardly a cloud very cold day I walked down on the river & to the mill from there to new ground old Mr Gouldin came up this evening to the Dr,s cutting malling rakeing leaves p[i]cked out a plant bed etc Tom has the distemper a swelling under the throat etc

Snow about 1 1/2 inches deep commenced about 11 ock Thad dined hear to day cold weather stoped snowing at night moon & stars are shineing out now

Fair cold day very cold morning I finished the shaft Bob broke my hors cart axle tree to day cutting & halling wood etc I went to T Castle carried Llewellyn sent Rose down to stay a day or two Mr Martin gave him a [certy fy?] about John

Cdy snowed a little I am helping Mama to get ice from the fish pond in my cart – Mama, horse cart I went to the mill carried a letter for Mr Gouldin from the Dr Mr John Gouldin killed 45 partridges Monday went home to day

Fair cold getting ice and finished getting sent to mill for meal I went to the mill with Dr Gouldin saw W Swann L G etc etc killed 2 turkeys one of mine a gobbler weighed 16 lbs [groze gross?] 13 neat one for Mama
