Day Journals of James T. Redd - September 1843

1st F

Rain commenced in the night with thunder & lightning showery day halled the chaft and fodder from shop and put it up in the barn picking the turnip patch over put a floor in the hog pen by the barn I went to the mill and had a turn of corn ground Walker & Lewis came back this morn 2 worming and suckering tobacco malling etc

2nd Sat

Fair warm I went to Carmel to meeting Brother Harris preached Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity etc [Psalm 133:1] Broth H bought land Anna was baptized. We went to T Castle worming tobacco picking the turnip patch 2 malling worming and suckering tobacco

Fair very warm I went to Carmel with Tho. Brother harris preached in the morning Text Joh 22 ct 21st verse part of it. Dick preached in the evening text John 3 ct 2 nd verse or we know that thou art a teacher come from God

Sally Lewis

Fair very warm I went to Mrs S Terrells with Thomasia & children I bought a mair for 65$ of Mr Lewis (Sally Lewis is her name) fallowing cutting rail timber picking over the turnip patch 2 worming tobacco cutting malling grubing etc

5th T

Rain in the evening very warm fallowing cutting rail timber grubing on the fence by the out gate I sent Walker to Mr Harris for some corn got 3 lbs a $3.00 a lb {malling rails cutting grubing etc

6th W

Rain in the evening a little Thomasia went to T Castle is quite sick I went to see Dr Gouldin he is quite sick I went to T. Castle in the evening fallowing grubing worming Tobacco Thomasia took Calomel at night 2 malling grubing cutting etc Peter went with Mr Morton [t]o get some timber for ice house

7th T

Rain in the evening I took quinine poly I came up home after Breakfast I went to the shop to have Sally shod with one shoe in front I sent 30 bushels of wheat to the Depot 2 grubing commenced pulling fodder Peter is with Mr Morton huing Mr Marton comenced work for Mama on the ice house

8th F

Rain a little I went to T Castle I sent Bob to the Depot with 26 1/2 bu of wheat making 56 1/2 in all malling cutting grubing etc I was taken w chil 2 sent 30 bu ff wheat to depot pulling fodder worming & suckering tobacco sent Joh to work in the place of Peter

9th Sat

Fair cool windy north wind finished fallowing worming tobacco malling etc Thomasia and self came up home to day and back to T. Cas 2 worming tobacco Peter and Mr Marton is getting shingles or blocks for shingles

10th Sun

Rain a little very cool day cole enough for a large fire I went to Bever Dam & went back to T Castle no preaching

11th M

Rainy day very damp & cool I came up home through the rain & sent all of the bonds belonging to the estate of S Redd that I had to coart by S. Redd I went back to T Castle at night malling grubing moved the hog pen in the yard Barbara went to Richmond 2 halling poles for the ice house worming & suckering tobacco etc Fleming came back from Depot or Burruss.--

12th T

Rain cool day we came home this evening from T Castle malling rails cutting rail timber grubbing etc went hunting with Tom Llewellyn & William on River 2 worming halling logs for Ice H

13th W

Rainy day fine rain Mr Gouldin bought Thackers corn for $2.12 1/2 cts a barrell halled 2 pine stocks to the mill grubing etc 2 finished halling the logs for ice house. Mr Marton commenced work on the ice house & pulled down the old kitchen

14th T

Rainy day a hard rain in the evening. makeing wash & mats etc malled a few rails etc Mr Morton getting out shingles at the shop cleaning out the house pulled it down etc

15th F

Rain in the fore part of the day cleared of in the evening Pulling fodder commenced etc 2 pulling fodder fixed a tobacco scaffold Fleming is helping Mr Marton about the shingles the River is up out of banks

16th S

Fair warm day we went to T. Castle in the evening pulling fodder worming tobacco stacking fodder etc I killed 2 squirls 2 suckering tobacco halling timber Mr Marton & Fleming getting timber for shingles etc shocking fodder

17th S

Fair I went with Thoa to Carmel no preaching the river being up prevented Brother Harris from coming over I saw Kr Korbs at T C he gave me some powder & shot. came home evening

Fair very warm indeed I caught the Black Steer and tied him by the barn pulling fodder shocking etc 2 worming halling logs to mill Peter broke a leg F & Mr Marton is at work on the old kitchen fixed the sider press etc

19th T

Fair quite warm we went to Dr, Gouldins etc spent the day made a pen around the oat stacks etc pulling fodder shocking etc 2 halled 2 logs to the mill pulling fodder worming Tobacco Fleming and Mr Marton is working on house ice etc etc

20th W

Fair very warm I started to Richmond got as far as T Castle and was taken sick & came back Dr Gouldin came over 2 pulling fodder Peter & Joh & Fleming are helping Mr Marton about the ice house loging it up in side stacking etc fodder

21st Thur

Fair very warm I am on the bed turned out the two heffers in end field pulling fodder putting up a stack in front of the house the first 2 pulling fodder helping Mr Marton about the ice house

22nd F

Fair warm I had a chil that lasted about 3 hours with vomiting I took about 3 table spoons balls [full?]of salts and quinine pulling fodder stacked a stack on Bro Ss land 2 Mr Morton finished loging up the ice house in side pulling fodder etc filling up around the ice house etc  

23rd S

Cdy day damp shelled a turn corn worming & suckering tobacco shocked up fodder in the evening etc 2 about the ice house F & Joh about the f

24th S

Fair very warm I took salts Brother Saml came to see me & Miss B Hill & Mama came over in the evening & staid a while Molly came to go to scool

25th M

Fair very warm took 6 grains blue mass and salts to feel better this evening Dr Gouldin and Simon came to see me pulling fodder stacking etc put up one stack 2 Fleming and Joe helping Mr Martin about ice house

26th T

Rain very hard in the evening Dr Anderson Dr Gouldin and Linnaus came to see me I am better takeing quinine Lewis was taken sick gave him a doce of calomel I sent Dr Anderson home in my barush [barouche] - pulling fodder shocking etc - a very windy day turned cool 2 Pulling fodder on the River helping about the ice house

27th W

Fair very cool day a north wind I took a doce of salts. I have been up most of the day. pulling fodder on the rode commenced using a stack of scotch oats. - - 2 pulling fodder Fleming working on the ice house with Mr Martin

28th T

Fair frost cool day I rode out Linnaeus came by Mr & Mrs Gouldin & Miss Mary Ann Temple & others came over in the evening pulling fodder stacking etc Lewis is a little better 2 Cutting tobacco pulling fodder etc etc Mr Martin & Fleming is about the ice house

29th F

Fair rather warmer Miss Mary Ann Temple & Sister Sarah Mama & Brother Saml Dined with me Thomasia is patching old coat I have staid in the house nearly all day to day - Lewis is still laid up 2 about the ice house Mr Martin & Fleming put on the rafters & sheeting it over

30th Sat.

Rain in the evening we went to T Castle to see the Dr he is rather worce he was leached in the evening finished pulling fodder worming and suckering tobacco etc I gave Mr W Terrell $5.00 for [le?] 2 finished stacking fodder blades 4 stacks in all
