Day Journals of James T. Redd - January 1843

First 11 pages appear to be math problems (cases) about interest, discount, loss and gain, etc. Amounts are figured in pounds.

There is also a shop account for 1843 which has been crossed out. Note: "2" indicates second entry for the same day.

1st Sunday

fair south wind I went to meeting at Mrs Swann’s to a funerald d sermon. tex Psalms 103 – 5-6 verses -

2nd M

fair south west wind I made a pen and put up the beef getting wood halling stalks to the stack sent to Mr Gouldins for my locks and keys etc getting wood fixing to kill hogs to morrow. Mama said something to me about managing for her

3rd T

fair cold a west wind halling wood rails slabs etc made a hog shelter and pen halled a load leaves in it. Mr Thacker moved his things or a part to day halled 2 loads of pines and put it around the steer pen caught a hog of mama one of the fattening hogs got away again I bought a wagon of Mr Smith for which I paid 10$.  I killed hogs 7 in all getting wood halling etc. sent to mill for meal and corn caught the hog and they let it get away again -

fair south wind or s. west – malling rails commenced on Sister Sarah lot. Rakeing leaves I made a rake to day. Thacker and his family moved to day in his house by me Shelling corn I put the stack straw under the shelter made a pen and put the beef up malling rails getting wood leaves etc cutting rail timber I caught the hog again in the slash killed the hog at night

fair cdy. S-W wind malling rails halling leaves sent husk and corn to mill for chop brought meal home beet out the purl beans [pearl beans are like pinto beans] to d rakeing leaves etc 2 malling cutting rails timber halling leaves rakeing etc weighed the hog that was killed last night it weighed 83 lbs pached [patched?] up the fence at the stack moderate weather

cdy warm S E wind hung up the first hog that was killed malling rails rakeing leaves halling in the hog pen by the grave yard I caught a hare 2 hung up the meat cut out the hogs the 8 weighed 756 lbs malling rails cutting rail timber

7th Sat

rainy evening very warm SE win malling rails halling leaves in the hog pen by the gr yd, rakeing etc went hunting to day started by Mr Quarles. Put up the tobacco in to the barn that was under the shelter. lent Fleming my wedges 2 beet out corn put up a part of the tobacco in the dhop loft malling rails ploughing halling leaves etc lent Fleming my wedges

8th Sun

rained till the evening the wind blew very hard from the South it blew down my stack and the leaves from the hog pen I hird a frog hollow this evening. It cleared of [off] in the evening very warm I gave Jessey a pr swg trees –[swingle trees]

9th M

fair packed up my stacks etc north wind I put a part of my tobacco in the dary struck it down cutting rail timber malling rails rakeing leaves etc halling wood 1 Load I gave Caufield a bond to collect it was 13$ and 75 cts – 2 put the ballance of the tobacco up the shop loft malling rails cutting rail timber halling leaves etc

foggy day rain in the evening very hard it thundered and lightened very much Southeast wind I finished packing down my tobacco malling rails getting leaves rakeing etc I saw HJ & J.D. to day 2 malling cutting rails timber rakeing leaves etc Fleming got a new pair of wedges from the shop to day

fair, north east wind, cool day I went to T Castle for physic for Thomasia she has the tooth ake malling rails cutting rail timber halling leaves rakeing etc shelling corn 2 malling rails Peter and Fleming cutting rail timber rakeing leaves halling etc.

cdy a small shower south Est wind foggy in the morning. Sent corn to the mill halling wood leaves rakeing & malling rails cutting rail timber etc William Swann dined with me I went to see his barn Tipler came home to day I made a trough 2 sent corn to the mill for chop and to grind in meal malling rails paid F cutting rail timber halling leaves rakeing etc turned out the calvs in the pasture

rain and snowed a little cdy halling leaves with 2 carts in the stack pen rakeing etc I made a trough Anna is at Mama she came yesterd evening – north wind 2 turned out 3 of the calvs to day in the pasture malling rails cutting rail timber rakeing leaves etc

fair S W wind cold day I went to Bever Dam to meeting Brother Harris. tex Psalms went to T Castle with Thomasia in the morning Brother Harris came with me to TC and stade all night halling leaves with both carts 2 malling rails halling leaves with 2 carts Joh and Dabney are helping etc

15th Sun

fair warmer south wind I went to Carmel H’s tex 2 nd Corint. 5 th ct 14 and 15 verses came home in the evening Thomasia got a pair of shoes of Mr Terrell for Llewellyn that were Williams

fair very warm day a south wind and a S west wind part of the day malling rails cutting rail timber halling wood grubbing etc I received a notice from John Swann to make the money out off Gatewood for which he is security I started to go to see Wright and got as far as Goldansville and came back Dick Bullard came by Mama to day. Thacker commenced ploughing to day 2 malling rails and finished at the new ground commenced on the river ploughing grubbing etc put up the pigs to day by the new house

fair very warm south and southwest wind I went to County Line Brother Powel preached Mat 11 th Ct. 28 th verce a negro child died at Mt Airy to day suddenly or nearly so malling rails cutting rail timber grubing etc Llewellyn went to T Castle with Marthy 2 sent corn to mill for chop and to grind malling rails cutting rail timber by Canfields ploughing grubbing etc

cdy warm the wind is more south than any other way it has changed several times in the corse of the day Commenced ploughing for corn and commenced a plant bed at the new ground by Cobbs halling wood for it and brush Emily Talley dined hear to day grubbing I lent Fleming my axe 2 ploughing grubbing commenced clearing for a plant bed on the river cutting down the trees etc

fair very windy a west win cool ploughing grubbing Walker and Lewis helped to burn a plant bed for Mama Bob burned the field where he was ploughing. Shelling corn 2 ploughing burnt a plant bed by the jack hold

fair cool day south west wind windy day ploughing grubbing sent corn to the mill halling rails to the line by Canfields halled 5 loads rails etc Miss H and E Mae came up 2 malling cutting rail timber halling wood etc ploughing grubing etc Robin year these are the greatest quantity I ver [ever] saw

fair warm in the morning cool evening south wind in the morning it changed about 12 oc to the north I went to Bool Church [Bull Church, near Ladysmith?] in the morning gave Br Wright 2 bonds on Filly Gatewood 14 each I carried Thomasia to T Castle to stay a while ploughing grubbing malling rails halling rails wood etc 2 ploughing malling rails halling etc finished fencing by river pasture fence Mary Louisa Taylor, came over to stay some there

29th Sun

fair cool north west win I staid at T. Castle all day Mr T and myself walked to look at the Dr’s wheat it is 4 or 5 in high

30th M

cdy day rain in the evening commenced a north east wind more east I came home from T C. I went to Hybla to carry a memorandum for Mama for him to get some things frpom Richmond Brothr’ s going down to morrow. Ploughing halling rails grubing etc finished halling from the slash malling rails in the morning 2 fencing finished the fence by Canfields chopped the tobacco bed over halling wood etc

rain the foar part of the day. North East South and west win cool day shelled 2 turns of corn and sent it to mill halling rails grubbing makeing wash etc I went to T Castle and staid all night 2 striping tobacco commenced getting wood sent Fleming to Simonds to work 2 days There are more robins about than was ever known
