Day Journals of James T. Redd - December 1843

1st F

Snow rain most all day ["comenced" lined out] commenced snowing last night Snow about 1 inch deep shucked out moar than 1/2 of the corn at the stack last night Humphrey & Archy stayed all day helping shel corn and cleaned out the stables etc 2 shelling corn

Cdy day a Snow last night about 1 in Mr Vass came up & 5 hands to day to shuck corn they will finish it to night Mr Vass dined hear to day going to give a supper the snow is all gone A Beggar came I gave him 15 cts I am a little better to day 2 making the farm pen halling wood

Fair I am better to day walked out twice to day Brother Harris Dr Gouldin & S Gouldin came over this evening - meeting at Carmel corn halling etc

14 bls corn

Fair a south west wind cool I patched the corn house and Bob halled up 4 loads corn 3 & a 1/s barrells in a load makeing 14 bls halled a load of wood 2 halling rails ploughing grubing etc

10 1/2 bls corn

Fair cool windy day Mr Terrell Walker came & dined brought a piece cloth from Mrs Gatewoods - Lewis helping Mr Martin from Breakfast halling up corn 3 loads Mr Martin patched the corn house Bob Walker & halled 2 loads poles 2 killed a beef the old black steer grubing ploughing halling wood etc

13 corn

Fair cool day Mr Carpenter came hear today and spent the day halling corn 4 loads 2 of mine & 2 from the pile of Brother Saml, corn 7 bls corn for my part makeing all of the corn halled today 10 1/2 barrells Mr Martin and Lewis about the house 2 cutting brush to c[o]ver the greens grubing halling wood etc

7th T

Rainy day a sleet Jas Carpenter went home he carryed my rifle & Doepter [diopter, gun sight] but he came home again. Lewis working [with] Mr Martin about kitchen fixing cow shelter or stalls at the barn shelling corn getting wood etc 2 shelling corn etc etc

8th F
17 1/2 bls

Fair a large frost a south wind Finished haling up corn halled 5 loads making 17 barrels & 1/2  17 1/2 put up 2 or 3 for S. Redd. Lewis helping Mr Martin about the kitchen Tom. Edmond T. Redd came hear this evening W Swann suped with me to night Mr Martin is done work hear. - 2 tied up 2 black steers halling rails about the fence by the shop

9th Satur

Fair a large frost. out away the stalks and made the pen put the cattle in the pen at night halled a load or 2 of wood we went to T. Castle to dinner Mr Noell & Miss Fanny came over to T. Castle 2 halling rails to run a Fence from the shop to the corner of Mama,s fence by Thackers. about the fence from the shop to dabs house takeing it down and putting it up again

10th Sun

Fair a large frost cool day spent the day at T Castle & came up this evening Dr Anderson rode out twice to day

clock coat etc etc

Rain d went to Depot for a clock & to have a coat made by Allen at $5.50 cts. the lining he furnishes for 1.50 cts bought a coffee pot [cham?] & tin cups etc saw George McLaughlin & others at the Depot. sent to mill for meal & with corn covering turnips & patching the garden halling wood etc Llewellyn went to Depot with me 2 about the fence by the shop halling wood.

Snow it covered the ground very cold evening a north wind a Mr Blades came down to look at my buggy making a lane for the cattle to go to water halling wood etc I covered over the potatoes etc I set up my clock & set it agoing 2 finished the fence by the shop stoping the ice pond halling rails wood etc George Gouldin died in the morning the 12th December 1843.

13th W

Clear not a cloud to be seen see a reely very cold day & night last. Dr G came back from his Fathers - halling wood & 2 loads rock for the kitchen. about the stack fence etc 2 cutting & halling wood rakeing leaves etc

14th Thur

Fair cold day Dr Gouldin came over this morning to look at my pigs he wants 4 & Lane 1 Canfield 5 I went to the mill to day sent by Robert Cobb to W Dandridge for a barrell flour halled 2 loads rock finished the stack fence to the swamp halling durt for craming 2 halling wood cutting wood rakeing leaves etc

Fair warmer I went to the Depot Bever dam had 3 pair shoes boots cut out to be made for $1.50 a pair bought 25 cts worth in the store halling  cornstalks halled a large rock for the kitchen halled wood etc lent Thacker a drawing knife Canfield had 4 pigs at 1.25 cts a piece. 2 working the black steer halling wood leaves etc

Rainy day makeing a back to the kitchen & craming it halling wood etc Thacker & family moved to day 2 getting wood etc

17th Sun

A little showery warm I staid at home all day Dr Gouldin & Lucy Robinson is quite sick Davy carryed the ballance of turkeys

Fair cloudy in the morning I went to Brother Samuels & to T Castle Dr Anderson had a sheep stolen from him about the kitchen etc 2 runing a fence from the porsimon [persimmon] tree to the corner of the fence by my house halling rails etc

19th T

Cdy a little shower I went to Edward Swann's sale & to Wares for my coat came by Mrs Terrells I lent Brother Saml $2.00 pd Mr Ware for my coat $7.00 Bob & Lewis about the kitchen halling wood etc cutting & halling wood malling rails etc.

20th W

Cdy in the morning clear evening warm or moderate weather halled a large rock for the [corn?] house working on the house Bob Walker & Lewis halled 3 loads rock I hurt my side lifting Katy & Ma ar to be [swund? summoned?] up for burning rales [rails] by the r [road?] 2 getting wood malling rails halling wood logs for house block

21st Th

Rain in the evening I went to Charles Thompsons sale I bought some hoes & spades & horse shoes etc $6.50. for the things. putting a back to Moriah's house halling dirt wood etc shelling corn 2 getting wood malling rails rakeing leaves etc

22nd F

Rainy day finished the kitchen chimney. Bob & Lewis working on it to day drawing etc halling wood cutting on the rode by the shop. Hill's shelling corn 2 getting wood hickry halling etc

23rd Sat

Cdy day getting wood for Xmas halling it etc I am quite sick to day mostly in the bed I ground a axe & two pair sisors etc Linnaeus came up to day 2 halling hickory wood etc cutting wood etc put up a pair horse blocks

24th S

Cdy We went to T Castle

25th M

Cdy staid at T Castle all day Bob & Jessey fixed or fixing the kitchen

26th T

Rain day J Carpenter came down to Mama,s brought 2 papers and my rifle etc Moria moved in her house

Fair I came up home and went back to T Castle

28th T

Fair warm or fine day came up home with Thomasia I saw Mr Harris & Dr Gouldin at Mama, Dr Gouldin went to T Castle in the morning Bought Sister Sarah, land at the valuation price or agreed to buy it when [Mama?] & I sebtled

Fair We went to Brother Saml in the morning & spent the day

30th Sat

Fair cold windy day Dr G & Louisa came to S Redd,s L R & Dr G went to the Depot to the hireing they brought me a pair of boots from Tylers

31st Sun

Fair cool day a west wind we came home from Hybla [accounting entries follow:
